This painting to me is a scene showing how forces of life operate. It displays a never ending struggle between opposite notions: chaos and order, hidden and manifest.
On the one hand, we have the stretch of dark stormy water that fills the entire background. It symbolizes raw nature before emergence of life – chaotic, cold and formless!
On the other hand, there is an enjoyable presence of a group of bright colourful fish that ride the stormy waves forcefully and gracefully. They represent life, order, purpose, and hope. Direction of movement of the group – entering from the lower left corner, and riding upward to the upper right corner – signifies achieving high goals through trust and cooperation among members of a community. Having a purpose in life, and combining it with tireless effort, makes life worth living.
