Description
This painting combines two transforming agents: ‘knowledge’ and ‘water’. The two panels in this piece represent open pages of an illuminated manuscript, which represents ‘knowledge’. I have decorated it with patterns painted in gold, turquoise, lapis lazuli and cinnabar – colours used by traditional artists. The content of a book (knowledge), unlike its rigid format is fluid – like water!
Water itself is a transformer! The Hindu ritual of immersing the body in the holy waters of the river Ganges, the Christian ceremony of Baptism, the Islamic ritual ablution before daily prayers, are examples that highlight the importance of water in man’s spiritual life. The patterns and images on the border of the painting appear less abstract and more recognizable, indicating that knowledge makes more sense when flowing out of its cage.
